چکیده

The present study investigated the effect of prior grammatical gender information provided by the production of a bare noun on the production of a syntactically unrelated, gender-inflected color adjective. The target language was Greek. A lexical priming task involving picture naming was employed. Participants saw a series of pictures, some in color and some in black-and-white; they had to name a black-and-white picture with the single noun (prime) and a color picture with the appropriately inflected color adjective (target). Prior gender information was shown to affect subsequent production of gender-marked words. The effect was restricted to nouns of one gender class (masculine) only. The implications of these results for the representation and processing of gender in production are discussed.

The representation of grammatical gender in the bilingual mental lexicon: the case of cognate and noncognate nouns

The present paper investigates the shared or independent nature of grammatical gender representations in the bilingual mental lexicon and the role word form similarity (as in the case of cognates) plays in these representations. In a translation task from Greek (L1) to German (L2), L1-L2 nouns with the same gender (gender-congruent) were translated faster than L1-L2 nouns with a different gende...

The two-stage model of lexical retrieval: evidence from a case of anomia with selective preservation of grammatical gender.

The two-stage theory of lexical production distinguishes the retrieval of lemmas from the subsequent retrieval of the forms of words. The information made available by lemma retrieval includes semantic and grammatical details that are specific to a particular word, but not the direct specification of its phonological or orthographic form. This theory makes very strong predictions regarding the ...

Acquisition and Representation of Grammatical Categories: Grammatical Gender in a Connectionist Network

In traditional models of language production grammatical categories are represented as abstract features independent of semantics and phonology. An alternative view is proposed where syntactic categories emerge as a higher-order regularity from semantic and phonological properties of words. The proposal was tested using grammatical gender in Serbian, a south Slavic language with rich morphology...

Representations and Processes in the Production of Pronouns: Some Perspectives from Dutch

The production and interpretation of pronouns involves the identification of a mental referent and, in connected speech or text, a discourse antecedent. One of the few overt signals of the relationship between a pronoun and its antecedent is agreement in features such as number and grammatical gender. To examine how speakers create these signals, two experiments tested conceptual, lexical, and ...
